The Potted Gate

The Potted Gate is owned and operated by me, Cathy Fairbanks.   My shop is located just steps from my home which I share with my husband Ted.   Situated on our farm, the shop attracts four legged visitors as well as shoppers.   It is not unusual to encounter    piglets rooting around in the parking area or a chicken having a meal in my flower beds.   Guests are often greeted by Zoey, my ‘dog’ child.  picture of zoeyPart of the shops charm is never knowing what you will encounter before you ever set foot inside.

The shop opened its door for the first time in May 2004.   The goal of the shop is to provide visitors with memories as well as a satisfying shopping experience. The shop continues to evolve and take the shape of the patrons who repeatedly visit.    I love antiques and re-purposing ‘stuff’.    I love art and hand made things. I love interior design, gardening, sewing, and art. My shop is full of the stuff I love!

I grew up on Big Bass Lake as Cathy Jones.   I have lived elsewhere, Florida, Texas, Indiana, but keep coming home to Northern Michigan.    It must be the clean air, cool lakes, and warm people who keep luring me back.

My husband Ted is a contractor and owner of Fairbanks Construction, Inc.    His love is farming.   He has lived in this area his entire life and would’t think of living anywhere else.

The Farm

picture of pig

The farm is a working farm with cows, pigs, and chickens. We grow mostly corn and alfalfa to feed to our livestock.

The land (over 100 acres) has been in the Fairbanks family for over 60 years.

Our cattle are Black Angus..is there another color of Angus? And our hogs are Durrock and Hampshire. Contact Ted for information on purchasing beef or pork.

I sell farm fresh eggs, and produce from the garden in the summer, when we have extra.
